(DES MOINES) The Ames teen who police say tried to take a sleeping child from his home, is in police custody today.

Seventeen-year-old Akuk Akok was released from a mental health facility Monday and officially arrested and charged as an adult with burglary and assault. He was also charged as a juvenile with "child stealing."

On May 22nd, Ames police were called to a home on McDonald drive, where family members say Akok came into the house while they were sleeping and pulled the child out through a basement window.

A family member heard the commotion and chased the suspect, saving the child.

Akok was found nearby and taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. He has been released and is now being held in  the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Eldora.
