DES MOINES – The Blank Park Zoo is celebrating the birth of a two-humped camel.

The male camel was born on Saturday, June 27, weighing in at 103 pounds.  Within two hours of birth, he was already up and walking.

Zookeepers say they are hopeful because the camel’s mother, Tyua, is nursing him.  Her pervious calf, Jolly, was hand-raised by zookeepers.

Zoo officials will decide on a name of the camel within the next couple of weeks.

He’ll stay off exhibit for a month or so, and will stay at the Blank Park Zoo until he matures.  Zoo officials say he’ll eventually go on to another zoo so that he and his father, Nikolai, with not compete against each other.

In addition to the baby, the exhibit has two adult camels and two juvenile camels.  For more information, visit the Zoo’s website.
