URBANDALE - Investigators spent all Saturday morning and part of the afternoon, searching through a Holiday Inn in Urbandale. The investigation stems from a scuffle in the hotel lobby between multiple police officers and three suspects.
"Shortly after 4 this morning, our officers were tripped to the Holiday Inn at 4800 Merle Hay Road on a drug complaint,” said Lang.
But when police arrived, two women and a man started fighting with the officers near the main entrance.
"Shortly after they got there, a scuffle started out with a male subject,” said Lang. “He ended up firing off one round during the scuffle and our officers returned fire."
Police say that man died at the scene, and during the scuffle, two women ran away. Several other police departments were called as backup and helped arrest the women about half a mile down the road.
“Everything happened really fast,” explained Lang.
Authorities say it's going to be an extensive investigation, which includes DCI, the Polk County Medical Examiner, and Attorney's Office and Urbandale police detectives.
"It's an officer involved shooting, with a death, so we have to make sure everything is covered, that everything is done right,” said Lang.
It also includes an internal review to make sure that the officers followed correct protocol during the fight.
Video evidence is a key to any crime and investigation and our officers have been wearing body cameras for quite some time,” said Lang.
At this time, authorities are not releasing the name of the officers or the suspects. Investigators are expected to hold a press conference early next week, releasing more details.
The manager of the Holiday Inn told us that everyone in the hotel was safe and sound during the entire incident. He says it's the first time anything like this has happened since it opened in 1998.
