DES MOINES -- Special Olympics fans welcomed home their athletes in style Monday at the Des Moines airport.
It was a triumphant return for part of the Iowa delegation who participated in the world summer games in Los Angeles. That delegation includes central Iowans Patrick Gulbranson from Stuart, and Lisa Spencer from Ankeny, both of whom competed in bowling.
"It was a blast," said Spencer. "It was so moving and I loved every minute of it." Lisa and Patrick earned some medals they were quick to show off to everyone at the airport today. They were also joined in Los Angeles by Mark Robinson from Cedar Rapids, an aquatics coach. Robinson has been coaching with Special Olympics for the past 18 years.
