2 killed in head-on crash on I-35

WEST DES MOINES, Ia. - UPDATE: The wrong-way driver of a car on I-35 has been identified as Monte Johnston, 49, of Hartford. The driver of the other car has been identified as Nripin Chinni, 32, of West Des Moines.


WEST DES MOINES - Two people were killed in a crash on I-35 early Sunday morning.

West Des Moines Police say they responded to a crash in the 1600 block of I-35 around 2:00am Sunday morning.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows that a vehicle was driving south on I-35 in the northbound lanes and collided with another vehicle. 

The drivers of both vehicles were killed in the crash. 

According to police, a passenger in the northbound vehicle suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. 

The crash caused I-35 to be closed for a period of time, but all lanes have since reopened to traffic. 

This investigation is ongoing. There is no word on the condition of the person injured.

West Des Moines Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Urbandale Police, Des Moines Police Ident team, Norwalk Police, Clive Police, and the Iowa State Patrol.
