DES MOINES - The man accused of hitting and killing a 12-year-old Des Moines girl took the stand Thursday.
Fernando Aguilar faces several charges, including vehicular homicide and failure to have a license or insurance. Aguilar was the cause of the crash that killed 12-year-old Leah Phann in September 2016.
The defense rested its case late Thursday morning. That's when Aguilar decided to take the stand. He said he was sorry for the accident.
"It's very scary being 18 and knowing that you're barely starting to live you life and you have an accident anybody else could have," said Aguilar on the stand. "You're being looked at as a bad guy, when that's not your intentions."
Paramedics and the medical examiner were the final witnesses in the state's case called to the stand on Thursday.
Closing arguments are expected to happen Friday, and the jury will likely begin deliberating.
