AMES - An Ames man is dead after he was shot in the head. The woman who lives with him says the gun was in her hand - but it was an accident.

The shooting happened inside a trailer park just south of the Veterinary Medicine facilities at Iowa State University. Police were called to West Date Court just after 6:00 a.m. Friday morning.
Police say a 36-year-old man died on the scene - and as of right now, authorities are calling this an accident. Ames police say a woman, who lives in the same trailer as the man who died, thought she heard something suspicious in their living room.
"She had retrieved a hand gun, then went out to the living room to further investigate what the sounds was, found nothing out of place, and she returned back to the bedroom, then the gun discharged," said Commander Jason Tuttle of the Ames Police Department.
Again, police are saying this was an accident - which makes it all the more difficult for people at Old Orchard Mobile Home Park to accept. A man who lives across the street says he is devastated by this news.
Police say they are working with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to piece together the details.
"We believe there's no ongoing threat to the public at this point," Tuttle said. "We have interviewed everyone that was at the trailer, so again, we will complete further follow up to determine what else needs to happen."
Police are hoping to get more answers about what actually happened here once an autopsy in completed this weekend. Names have not been released, as authorities continue to contact family members
