Ames Police Department Investigating Overnight Shooting

Three people were treated for gunshot wounds

AMES – Police are looking into an alleged shooting incident, where three people were taken to the hospital.

Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to an area near Chamberlain and Stanton, to check on a fight. When they got there, they were able to break it up.

Police say shortly after that, a red car stopped in the 200 block of Welch Avenue and fired shots into the crowd from the inside of the car. Investigators believe the person inside of the car was involved with the fight earlier.  They say two officers who were in the area were able to shoot back in the direction of the car.  That’s when the driver stopped shooting and took off, down Welch Avenue and over to Lincoln Way.

Three people were taken to the hospital, to be treated after the shooting. One was taken to Des Moines; the other two went to Mary Greeley Medical Center. None of the injuries are considered to be life-threatening.

Detectives spent Sunday morning interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence. So far, police have not named any suspects. Anyone who witnessed the fight and has information is asked to contact the Ames Police Department.
