Area school districts respond to threats

JOHNSTON - Central Iowa school districts are keeping a close eye on the text message threats made to Johnston students Monday night.

Local 5 has been in contact with many of the school districts in the metro Tuesday morning to see if any similar cases have been detected in their school districts. So far, no other schools and students in those schools have been threatened. Below is a gathering of school districts' statements sent out to parents Tuesday morning.

WAUKEE
The safety of our students and staff is a priority for Waukee Community School District. We are aware of the incident in a neighboring school district and have been in contact with our local law enforcement officials. At this time no threats to our students, staff or buildings have been reported. We will continue to work with law enforcement and follow all safety protocols.

WEST DES MOINES
WDMCS Families, As you may have heard through local media, the Johnston Community School District is closed today, Tuesday, October 3, due to anonymous threats made to students and parents. We have spoken with the West Des Moines and Clive Police Departments, and are monitoring how this local threat may impact our district. At this time we do not believe there is a current need to make any changes to any school schedules or processes. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance, so we do not take the situation with our neighboring school district lightly. We will continue to monitor the situation, and will communicate if we make any changes from our current decision.

URBANDALE
Urbandale Families and Staff,
This has been an unsettling morning given the events that led to Johnston CSD cancelling school today which consisted of students and parents receiving anonymous threats via text messages. We are not aware of any threats that have been made against Urbandale students, families, or staff. I want to reassure you that we have open lines of communication with our Urbandale Police Department. We, along with Urbandale PD, will continue monitoring the situation throughout the day and week. If you receive a message that feels threatening in any way, please phone Urbandale

DES MOINES

Classes and activities are continuing as usual today at DMPS....we were made aware of threats made late yesterday, and that the Johnston Community School Disitrct decided to cancel classes today....there are no credible threats or reasons that would cause us to make changes to the school day.
