DES MOINES - A 12-year-old boy is in the hospital after getting hit by a car while crossing a busy intersection Thursday morning. He was hit so hard that his shoes were thrown into the roadway.

According to Des Moines Police, the boy was crossing SW 9th Street a little before 7 a.m. when he was hit by a car. The woman driving the car stopped immediately, and tried to help. A nurse who was driving by also stopped to administer aid to the child while an ambulance was on the way.

"Our traffic investigators are putting together their speed investigation," said Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department. "We've got some good witnesses who stuck around that we were able to interview, so hopefully we're able to get some information from them and figure out in the next few days exactly what happened."

The 12-year-old is a Des Moines Public Schools student, but he has not yet been identified.
