Building has sprinkler issue in Urbandale condo fire

URBANDALE - Fire investigators believe that sprinkler system issue is somewhat to blame for a massive fire this week at a condo building.

Plumwood Terrace condos burned for hours Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, as the fire at the complex started in the attic. The building is old, and doesn't have a sprinkler system, according to fire investigators. A fire broke out in the same complex nearly eight years ago, destroying many people's homes.

"We are fortunate no one was hurt," said Urbandale assistant fire chief Jerry Holt. "I am an advocating for sprinklers. This is a good example had there been one in this apartment it would have been 30,000 versus a total loss of this building."

Local 5 contacted the complex owners; they refused to comment on the issue. Investigators on the scene for hours said residents should be thankful no one was hurt in the blaze.

"You just have to say the stars lined up right," said Holt.

Crews don't have a cause for the fire right now. They worked throughout the day on Tuesday to put hot spots out. It's now 100 percent contained.
