Changes could be coming for alcohol distributors

DES MOINES - Gov. Reynolds is hearing from state agencies this week about their budget requests for the upcoming legislative session. One of them was from the Alcoholic Beverages Division.

The administrator with the ABD, Stephen Larson, wants to change the way alcohol is distributed throughout Iowa. Right now it has to go through a central location in Ankeny.

"As our customer base steadily grows, we are continuing to meet their expectations with the same distribution model that was created in 1987 and will that distribution model be sustainable and what do we need to modify to ensure that we are successful in the distribution of spirit," said Larson. "We have to make the necessary adjustments so that we can maximize profits and minimize risk."

The budget request for ABD isn't much for FY 2019: it's about $1 million.
