DES MOINES - Low-emission buses will soon be part of the DART bus fleet around central Iowa, thanks to a grant secured by Rep. David Young on Tuesday.
Young is a member of the Appropriations Committee and Transportation Subcommittee, and personally called the Department of Transportation to give his support to DART's request of electric buses.
The $1.45 million grant will be used to buy several electric buses and create the infrastructure needed to support electric buses. Upgrading to these types of buses will allow DART to meet sustainable growth by reducing tailpipe emissions by three million pounds over the lifetime of every bus.
In order to get the grant, DART had to get local matching funds, and got those from MidAmerican Energy.
The buses will most likely be part of the DART fleet by spring 2019.
