CRESTON- An investigation into a body found in a Creston apartment is being treated as "suspicious", according to the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.
The Union County Dispatch Center received a call around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday to do a welfare check at 300 East Montgomery, Apartment 3 in Creston. Upon arriving and entering the residence, Creston Police Department officers discovered the body of a deceased male.
The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Paul Allen Scheel. The body was transported to the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny, where an autopsy will be conducted.
People who live in Creston are in disbelief.
"That's just crazy. I didn't expect anything here," said William Davis of Creston.
Davis drives around Creston every day, handing out newspapers to local businesses -- including at the Eagles Lodge bar. But he was shocked to learn a man was found dead in an apartment on the bottom floor of that same building.
"I've been born and raised here in Creston," Davis said. "I was born in the hospital and I've been here, I got kids here, and it's just unreal. It's just unreal in the small town of Creston."
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation cannot reveal much right now, but say the evidence is alarming.
"Just from the things that we've found inside the residence, can't really go into a lot of those specifics, but right now, we are treating it as suspicious," said Michael Motsinger, a Special Agent with the Iowa DCI.
Investigators are not sure if this was an isolated incident, so they are keeping an eye on the community. And just like Creston residents, the DCI is surprised a dead body was found in town.
"It's a rare occasion especially in the rural departments," Montsinger said. "They might only have one death maybe every 20, 25 years."
Because this death has been ruled suspicious, police will be outside the apartment building for several hours and they are asking the community to be on high alert.
If the public has any information regarding Scheel, they are asked to call the Union County Law Enforcement Center at (641) 782-8402.
This is an ongoing investigation being worked jointly by the Creston Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
