Des Moines man shot while trying to break up fight, police say

Suspect charged with attempted murder among other charges

DES MOINES- A man was shot at 9th and Forest Avenue Sunday night around 10:15 p.m. Sunday night while trying to break up a fight, according to a police report. 

Two women were fighting in the street, and a 44-year-old man alerted his 31-year-old roommate of the alteraction going on. The two proceeded to break up the fight and yell at another male, who reportedly punched one of the females in the face. 

The roommates then walked back to their vehicle in the west end of the Mount Hebron Church parking. The man who allegedly punched one of the women pulled out a gun and shot it in the air before another man pulled out a gun and shot towards the two roommates. 

The 31-year-old was struck in the pelvis and was transported to Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery on non-life threatening injuries. 

The altercation in the street centered around one of the women owing another money from paying off traffic tickets, according to the witness statement. 

The suspect in the shooting is charged with attempted murder, as well as intimidation with a dangerous weapon, among other charges.
