DES MOINES - The ACLU of Iowa is suing the Department of Human Services over transgender individuals' rights being violated.
The group claimed Thursday that DHS' ban on Medicaid coverage of surgical care for transgender Iowans is unconstitutional.
"Coverage for transition-related medical care, including surgery, is essential for some transgender Iowans," said Legal Director Rita Bettis.
ACLU of Iowa's lawsuit is representing two Iowans, EerieAnna Good and Carol Ann Beal. In it, it's arguing virtually all other medical treatments are covered under Iowa's Medicaid program, except transgender surgeries.
