Girl Scouts honor "Inspiring Women of Iowa"

Honors for courage, confidence, and character

Wednesday's luncheon highlighted women in central Iowa who are doing incredible things to uplift their communities. Local 5's Amanda Krenz hosted the luncheon, and sat down with some of the women to find out what they're doing to improve lives and empower women.

"I'm really proud that Courage League serves greater Des Moines community with programs for special needs adults and kids," Melissa Clarke Wharff said.

Shalya McCormally runs a unique organization that helps democratic women who want to get elected, and encourages them to run and be active in politics.

Others honored included...

Keshiea Meissner, Executive Director at Beacon of Life Des Moines: "When I was 25 I took over as executive Director, there were naysayers that didn't think I could handle it at a young age."

Shannon Archer, Assistant Polk County Attorney: "I am proud of being the voice for victims of abuse when they're not strong enough to speak for themselves"

About 80 women were nominated for the awards that were given out. A committee narrowed it down to 12 finalists and finally, 3 women in the categories of courage, confidence, and character went home with awards.
