How to avoid a nasty crash on the highway

ANKENY - A bad crash on I-80 Monday involving five carsand semis in eastern Iowa is a reminder to Iowans to pay attention on the road, and slow down.

Video obtained by Local 5 shows the dangerous of failing to slow down in time. Cars crash into each other when you don't pay attention. Iowa Department of Transportation are urging drivers to avoid these types of secondary crashes.

"So if you have somebody who's distracted coming into the area at 70 miles an hour and not paying attention to what they're coming up on, they're going to hit the back of that traffic or have to slam on their brakes," said Bonnie Castillo with the DOT. "That causes a chain reaction and that's where we see most of our secondary crashes."

DOT officials said watch out for warning signs on the road and traffic control devices, and avoid texting and driving.
