DES MOINES – Interstate 35 from Ames to Clear Lake is closed after several crashes, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The Iowa DOT cites poor visibility and icy road conditions as causing the accidents, which include a jackknifed semi near the Highway 20 interchange.
The State Patrol asks drivers to avoid the area and to not drive, if possible.
Whiteout conditions with blowing and drifting snow are being reported across the northern counties, impacting road conditions. Wind gusts are expected to climb to around 40 miles per hour in some parts of the state.
As of Monday afternoon, Des Moines metro roads were listed as clear.
