Iowa police chief recalls his experience of 9/11

PLEASANT HILL - Chief Al Pizzano works for the Pleasant Hill Police Department now, but on September 11th, he was in New York City.

Local 5 got a chance to talk with him about what he experienced 16 years ago.

“I headed into New York to my command, which was Trans District 33. I was told to get as many people as we could find, to start the evacuation of the New York City subway system and that was my main responsibility, was to evacuate the train system,” said Pizzano. “Obviously it was a tragic day, but it was something that I was proud to be involved with, working with my team, police officers, firefighters, everybody within New York came together to help the victims and to do everything that we can.”

Chief Pizzano also participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5k in Des Moines on Monday. The money for that event goes to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Building for America's Bravest. They help build smart homes for injured service members.
