DES MOINES - A group of state and local leaders met at the statehouse Wednesday to call on Gov. Branstad to stop more factory farms from setting up shop in Iowa.
The coalition of groups and officials, including Bill Stowe, CEO of Des Moines Water Works, is working on a new statewide campaign to stop the expansion of unwanted factory farms in Iowa.
"We believe that a moratorium to stop new construction or expansion of combined animal feeding operations
is absolutely necessary," said Stowe. "We have 21 million hogs in this state and 3 million people and clearly the hogs and their environmental impact are crowding out the concerns of 3 million Iowans."
The group delivered a letter outlining their concerns to Branstad's office after the meeting. No word yet on Branstad's response.
