Makeover underway for Des Moines City Hall

DES MOINES - Thanks to a donation from Karcher, restorations are being made to the city’s 105-year-old building.

Karcher, the German family-owned company, is donating all services, labor, materials and cost to restore City Hall. The cleaning involves steam at over 300 degrees to remove any soiling or biological growth on the stone. Karcher has conducted over 150 of these types of cleaning projects to numerous historical buildings around the world. They are the only company to do this specific kind of cleaning and restoration.

"To be here in Des Moines, and we have this culture sponsorship where we clean monuments all around the world. So I'm traveling a lot around the world, and it's always exciting and you learn so much about the building and the city and environment around here. It's great,” said Nick Heyden, application technician for Karcher.

The cleaning project donation from Karcher saves Des Moines taxpayers $80,000. Karcher will begin restoration on the Des Moines Police Department in July 2018.
