DES MOINES - A woman who said she was abused by her adoptive mother is now suing her in Polk County court.
Malayia Knapp is 19. She was adopted when she was 10 by Mindy Knapp in Urbandale. Malayia is suing Mindy Knapp for assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, severe emotional distress as a bystander, outrageous conduct.
Malayia filed the petition in court on Monday, and it details abuse inside the Urbandale home for several years. Malayia accuses her adoptive mother of abusing her adoptive siblings as well, such as "perform excessive physical barefoot and outside, dump water on her head and beat her with a belt..."
Malayia Knapp is now out of the home and going to DMACC. Her case has helped bring to light issues within the Department of Human Services.
