MARSHALLTOWN - Firefighters battled a pretty bad home fire Friday night, leaving the home a total loss.
According to Marshalltown fire crews, they got a call around 9 p.m. to 411 West Linn street. The home was on fire, and heavy smoke was coming from the house. Crews were told one person was in the basement, where the fire was coming from. Crews tried to get into the home, but were hampered "by hoarding conditions." The same conditions existed around the structure, which further limited firefighter access.
Fire personnel were pulled from the structure and began a defensive attack. After several hours of trying unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire a decision was made to bring in heavy equipment in order to gain access and expose areas of the building that were not accessible. As building walls were brought down, firefighters were able to extinguish deep-seated fires throughout the structure.
No one was injured during the incident and the structure is a total loss. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
