GRIMES - Police say a young boy is dead and his mother is in the hospital.

Officers and EMS were called to the home in the 300 block of Valley View Drive around 10 a.m. Friday.

Polk County investigators were dispatched to the home after a caller reported a problem at the house. When they arrived, they found an 8-year-old boy in the yard. When investigators went inside, they found an unresponsive adult woman near a young boy, who had died.

Sources tell Local 5 the young boy who died was around two or three years old.

Investigators were on the scene for hours Friday, trying to piece together what happened to the young boy who was found dead inside.
Neighbors tell Local 5 they are shocked and that they have never seen anything like this in their neighborhood before.
"We did receive a call at 10:09 this morning for an unresponsive juvenile male and an unresponsive adult female at a residence on about the 300 block of Valley View Drive here in Grimes," said Major Brent Long of the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
When Polk County deputies got to the scene, the boy was found dead, and his mother seriously injured.
"The adult female was transported to a local hospital in very serious condition," Major Long said. "That's all I know at this point, as far as any injuries, I don't know."
What authorities do know, is that they believe no one else was involved in the incident, so they are not looking for any suspects.
Neighbors tell Local 5 the mother only lived in her Grimes duplex for about a month of two. And investigators are still piecing together how this tragedy could have happened.
"At this time, Polk County detectives along with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation are continuing to investigate," Major Long said.
Authorities have not released the name of the mother or her son as of Friday night.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the boy's cause of death will become clearer once an autopsy is done. Stay with Local 5 for the latest on this investigation.
