Planned Parenthood to close 4 Iowa locations

DES MOINES- Four Planned Parenthood health centers in Iowa will be closed as a result of the state's latest budget cuts, the organization said Thursday.

Centers in the Quad Cities, Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City will close June 30, with the facility in Quad Cities continuing to provide abortion services until the building is sold.

Planned Parenthood estimates that nearly 15,000 patients in those communities and neighboring areas will no longer have access to their provider of choice. The organization claims that the closings are a direct result of the “defunding” actions taken first by Governor Branstad this legislative session.

"These health center closures are devastating for the patients and communities who rely on us, and for our staff, donors and supporters,” said Suzanna de Baca, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland president/CEO. “While politicians may have abandoned women in Iowa, Planned Parenthood never will. We have been in Iowa for 83 years, and we are not going anywhere."
