Victims identified in Army Post Rd crash

DES MOINES, Ia. - UPDATE (10/22/17 at 6pm)-

Police have identified the children involved in Saturday's deadly crash on Army Post Road.

Police say the 13-year-old male killed in this crash has been identified as Des Moines resident Nariyo Lee.

The 12-year-old male injured in the crash was identified as Des Moines resident Kaden Kinley. He remains hospitalized.

The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit continues the technical investigation of this crash.


UPDATE (10/22/17)-

According to new information from police, an investigation has indicated that a red Dodge pick-up truck was driving westbound on SE Army Post Road when it attempted to pass other westbound traffic. A white Honda crossover-style SUV was driving eastbound on Army Post. The two vehicles collided, head-on.

Police say 28-year-old Des Moines resident Ryan Rench was operating the Dodge pickup truck.

He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. He remains hospitalized.

Rench was the only occupant of the pickup truck.

Police also say 56 year-old Des Moines resident Kathryn Kinley was operating the Honda. She was killed in the crash.

Also killed in the crash was a 13-year-old male passenger. His name is being withheld while a complete family notification is made.

A third passenger in the Honda, a 12-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He remains hospitalized. His name is also being withheld at this time pending family notification.

The Des Moines Police Department is continuing to investigate this crash. 


UPDATE (3:15PM)-

Des Moines Police say the crash happened around 1:30 Saturday afternoon in the 3600 block of SE Army Post Road.

Police say that officers from both the DMPD and rescue personnel from DMFD responded to the crash.

According to police, responding officers and medics found a head-on collision that had occurred as one vehicle entered oncoming traffic during an attempt to pass other vehicles.

Police say two people died at the scene of the crash. Two additional people have been transported, in critical condition, to local hospitals, according to police.

The crash is still under investigation.



Des Moines Police are on scene of a crash on Army Post Road.

According to the police department's Facebook page, both eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on between the 3600 and 3800 block of Army Post Road.

The department says the DMPD Traffic Unit is investigating a fatality accident.

Police say the road will remain closed for at least 3 hours this afternoon.
