Pulling planes to raise money

Raising money for vets to go to D.C.

CEDAR RAPIDS- The phrase 'pulling your weight' had a lot more meaning this weekend in Cedar Rapids.

On Saturday, teams of 25 tested their strength by plane-pulling to raise money for the eastern Iowa honor flight. The teams competed against each other to see who could pull a 727  jet twelve feet. Whichever team pulls the fastest, wins.

This was the second annual Pulling for Honor fundraiser. The money raised will go toward helping local veterans take trips to war memorials in Washington D.C.

"It's a great community way to say thank you to them, and give them recognition. Sometimes many of them have come home and haven't had that thank you that they are so deserving of," says airport director Marty Lenss.

The goal for this year is to raise at least 100,000 dollars, which can go towards flights. To date, the eastern Iowa honor flight has organized nearly thirty flights to D.C. from the eastern Iowa airport.
