School board elections held on Tuesday

The work of those elected impacts nearly half a million students, but not a lot of people turn out to these elections.

"Well historically it's always a tough turnout because a lot of times you're not running with people that you know who they are. You don't have the Republican or Democratic Party or Libertarian Party out sending you mailers. So what this is, is people are really civic minded that want to serve the community, which is an excellent way to do it by being a school board member," said Jamie Fitzgerald, Polk County auditor.

The polls close at 8 p.m. in Des Moines and in most central Iowa districts.
