Special Olympics Iowa kicks off summer games

Thousands of athletes from across the state are taking over Iowa State University's camps in Ames this weekend.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics Iowa's Summer Games.

Competitions are underway now and continue through Saturday, and there's a variety of sports like tennis, track and field and bocce ball.

Athletes that win this week will have a chance to compete at the national level later this year in Seattle.

Organizers say it's a great way to give these competitors a chance to take on some of their friends and neighbors, all while promoting exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
