Texas woman makes cross country journey to raise diabetes awareness

Tracy Herbert was diagnosed with the diabetes in 1977

WEST DES MOINES - A woman who was once fighting for her life, is now spreading a message of hope on a cross-country journey.
Tracy Herbert is originally from Fort Worth, Texas. She stopped at Fox Brewing in West Des Moines on Saturday, to meet with one of her daughter's old college friends and to sign her book.
Herbert's ride celebrates the 40 years she's lived with Type 1 Diabetes. When she was first diagnosed, her doctor told her she'd only be able to live for 20 years with it.  Now, as she's riding and raising awareness and money to fight diabetes, she's showing how difficult daily life can be, but that you can also overcome it.
"People a lot of times think that, oh, you just don't have to eat sugar, you just have to give up a little bit of food, and it's so much more intense than that. So, that's what this ride has gone into now, from celebrating to now saying this is diabetes, this is what we have to do: the good, the bad and the ugly," said Herbert.
Herbert started her trip in San Francisco on June 13. She's expected to finish in New York City, some time in the middle of September. To find out more, or to donate, please click here.
