Thousands run in Des Moines Marathon

DES MOINES, Ia. - Saturday's gloomy weather brightened up just in time for the Des Moines marathon races on Sunday morning.

People lined up downtown for the 26.2 mile trek bright and early Sunday.

Soon after their start, the runners for the half marathon geared up for their course.

The winner of the 13.1 mile half-marathon told us how the crowd was a big part of her success.

"The crowd was just so much fun, so excited, and all the runners on the half marathon that I was passing on the other way. They were cheering for me and it made me go so much faster. I just couldn't help myself, I ended up running faster than I thought I would. I'm so happy I got to run this, they let me in last minute, so I'm just really fortunate Des Moines let me run this. I'll definitely be back.", says Emma Bates, the winner.

Local 5 is a proud sponsor of the Des Moines Marathon.
