Two deadly crashes over the weeekend

Des Moines police said speeding played a role in both crashes

DES MOINES - Des Moines police said speeding caused the death of two people over the weekend. 

The first one happened Saturday at the intersection of 44th Street and Hickman Road. Police said an SUV and a motorcyclist collided around 6:00 pm. Officers said medics found 22 year old Edwin Ramirez dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was not hurt. The passenger was treated for minor injuries. 

Sunday, a memorial continued to grow for Ramirez. It was full of flowers and candles as well as loving messages. One of the young man's friends said Ramirez had a passion for cars and he is already missed. 

The 2nd crash happened Sunday morning at the 2200 block of east 24th street when a car hit a utility police. It happened around 3:00 am. 43 year old Sheila Hensley of Des Moines died in the crash. She was the only one in the car while it happened. Police said excessive speed played a big role in the crash. Hensley was wearing a seatbelt when it happened.
