CORALVILLE - After confessing to two counts of murder in Union County last month, Jerry Dillinger was found dead in his cell at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center Wednesday.

According to the State Department of Corrections, Dillinger died of an apparent suicide. Dillinger was found unresponsive, hanging from a bed sheet in his cell at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

The Johnson County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy, but according to officials there is no evidence to suggest the cause of death was anything other than asphyxia due to suffocation.

Dillinger was 37 years old and had just begun serving two life sentences for first degree murder. His sentence began on January 22, 2016.
