SLATER - The Story County Sheriff's Office confirmed with Local 5 that a welfare check conducted Monday evening was done at the request of the Des Moines Police Des Moines Department.
The check was in connection to Monday's double homicide, they confirmed.
Lieutenant Jeff Dodds with Story County said they went to the home at 101 1st Avenue around 5:30 p.m. looking for a woman named Peggy Reed. She wasn't there when they arrived, he said.
Family members of Peggy Reed tell Local 5's Kattey Ortiz the person of interest named in the double homicide, Michael John Wanchanic, picked up Reed at her house an hour after police responded to the scene in Des Moines Monday evening. They haven't been seen or heard from since.
Reed's family says they are concerned about her welfare and hope Wanchanic leaves her unharmed.
Wanchanic and Reed used to date, according to family. They also have kids together.
Police are actively searching for Wanchanic for questioning and he may be driving a beige-colored 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan with Iowa license plates DMR 234.
The case is still under investigation.
