DES MOINES - Des Moines-based Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has announced they will join the federal health insurance exchange and begin selling marketplace plans during the 2016 open enrollment period.
Wellmark Chairman and CEO, John Forsyth, said the company has heard their customers' desire to have Wellmark producs on the public exchange where they can access subsidies.
Wellmark cited legal concerns for their decision to opt out of the exchange in the past. Iowa has one of the lowest participation rates in the country - just 18 percent of Iowans have enrolled in a marketplace insurance plan on the exchange.
