DES MOINES -  Wednesday marked the first day of Lent, a six week period in preparation for Easter.

We visited St. Ambrose cathedral in Des Moines to witness the rituals of Ash Wednesday.

The period of Lent is supposed to be dedicated to reflection, prayer and often fasting. Many Christians also give up certain foods or luxury items.

"Over the years, I've given up lots of things during Lent and i just haven't given a lot of thought, but I am going to commit more to my faith," said parishioner Bob Myers.

"Live my life in a more careful and studied and spiritual way, but the thing I'm going to give up is Coca-Cola because I really like it," said parishioner Deb Tharnish.
