What fire crews deal with in the dangerous cold

WEST DES MOINES - As crews continue to work the scene of a condo fire in Urbandale, many are wondering how firefighters are managing in the dangerously cold weather.

Local 5 sat down with Brian O'Keefe with the Des Moines Fire Department to get some insight as to what crews are battling in the cold, and how prepared they are to handle it.

"Under these extreme conditions, it's as miserable as you can imagine," said O'Keefe. "Our clothing, our equipment is based off of your standard temperatures. If we were to wear heavy clothing, we wouldn't be able to have the flexibility...you can't be clumsy climbing a later, you've gotta wear some basic think clothing."

Several crews from nearby fire departments were on the scene helping put out the Urbandale blaze Monday night.
