ANKENY - The single vehicle accident happened near the 6900 block of NE 29th street in rural Ankeny.
A female driver died at the scene, while the young child was taken by helicopter to the hospital. At first glance, officials determined that speed was most likely a factor in that crash.
"What we know right now is that the vehicle was traveling southbound on NE 29th Street and ended up leaving the roadway, entering a ditch and crashing into some trees,” said Sgt. Brandon Bracelin, Polk County Sheriff's Department.
Around noon Friday, firefighters and police officers found that car smashed against a tree just off of NE 29th Street. Investigators marked off the path the car traveled, but say they're still trying to figure out where the car first started sliding.
"We had some witnesses in the area that've seen the vehicle travel down NE 29th Street, but nobody's seen the collision,” explained Bracelin. “They just drove up and seen the vehicle in the trees."
With temperatures in the 20s, there were patches of ice along the road. Most of the road was cleared by plows, but some slick spots remained.
"The roadways are wet in most places,” said Bracelin. “There are some areas of snow cover, but we believe that speed may have been a factor in this accident and our detectives are currently investigating it."
At this time, the names of the driver and the passenger are not being released. Authorities say it’s a reminder to be extra cautious on the road. Even if the roads appear to be dry, there could still be slick spots.
