Man Charged in Deadly Accident

STORY COUNTY, Iowa - Story County deputies have arrested 23-year-old Ernesto Acevado, of Baytown, TX, after a deadly accident on Saturday night.

At 11:39 p.m. Saturday, the Story County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a single vehicle rollover accident on 115th Street east of 600th Ave in Story County. 

Deputies say Acevado drove eastbound on 115th Street, and failed to stop at the stop sign at 600th Avenue then left the roadway, rolling several times in the ditch.  31-year-old Hernan Loza, of Texas was ejected from the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at the scene. Acevado was flown by Mercy One helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, and two other occupants were taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Acevado, who was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, had been hospitalized for the injuries from the crash, but was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he was released.  Acevado is currently being held in the Story County Jail on $30,500 cash bond on charges of Homicide by Vehicle (Class B Felony), Serious Injury by Vehicle (Class D Felony), and Failure to Obey a Stop Sign.
