(DES MOINES) - Des Moines Water Works says irresponsible farming cost their customers $1.5 million.

Des Moines' water supplier sent out the tally on Monday of running their nitrate-removal facilities over the last couple years.

They turn it on when nitrate levels get too high in the Racoon or Des Moines rivers, to keep the drinking water under the EPA standard.

Water Works blames three Northern Iowa counties in particular for the runoff and has filed a lawsuit against their Boards of Supervisors for not properly managing farm runoff.
