It feels like an eternity since the last time the Hawkeyes took the field in their blowout loss to Tennessee in the TaxSlayer Bowl. It's hard to believe but on Saturday quarterback CJ Beathard is only making his second career start for Iowa.
(Kirk Ferentz) I think we forget how inexperienced he is. He's started one game since he's been here so, uh, but he's a fourth year player he knows what's going on he's got good skills and tools and if he hadn't grown the way we talked about we wouldn't have made that decision.
(Alex Giaimo) Last season Beathard played behind former Hawkeye quarterback, Jake Ruddock. They split time in the bowl game but Beathard was later named the starter in the Spring, which means there will be no quarterback controversy this year.
(Tevaun Smith) Now that I think about it I forgot that he didn't really play as much as he did last year so. I mean but it's exciting it kind of feels like he's been the starter with his leadership and they way he's been practicing throughout camp.
(Alex Giaimo) That leadership stems from the fact that this isn't Beathard's first time around the block and he is feeling confident rather than pressured.
(CJ Beathard) Yea it's a little different. Each and every year is different. The more comfortable you feel, as the years go by, and the older you get, it just becomes easier. And obviously this year is different and I'm going into it knowing I'm starting.
(Giaimo) He will get his first shot this Saturday against Illinois State. With your Hawkeye Headquarters report in Iowa City, Alex Giaimo, Local 4 Sports. "
