Beard Competition Growing On Iowans

DES MOINES - Throughout history men have always tried to measure their level of manliness. Arm wrestling, chugging a beer, whether or not they cried during The Notebook. Today's measure of a man, how well you can grow hair on your face, or corn.

Pioneer Hall was filled with beards all lengths and even colors for the State Fair's Beard Growing Contest. Beards are judged in different categories including best groomed, longest beard, and most unique. None more prominent than Parker Gibson’s.

The Adel native was inspired by last year's beard contest and decided to go with the ‘Field of Dreams’ beard, nailing every little detail, including players in the "field." the stalks of corn, even the bases.

"Well I knew I wanted to enter the competition in a unique styling category and I made my girlfriend watch ‘Field of Dreams’ for the first time so came up with this and figured we could pull it off."

Gibson easily won the Most Unique Beard. Meanwhile yours truly decided to get in on the fun, entering the "Best Groomed Category."
Some of my competition gave me hope.

"Which of us is better groomed?
"Oh i think yours is probably better groomed."

Others thought differently.

"You call that a beard? I just thought you forgot to shave this morning."

But when judging finally came around...

"226, 226."

My number was called, fourth place in the Best Groomed Category. Not bad for a seven-day-old beard. And how can you be mad when Santa takes first place?
