Today's Forecast

Today should be pretty calm and decent but a large system will be moving through the state overnight tonight into Tuesday. This afternoon expect cloudy skies with a high near 32 degrees. Overnight tonight we are going to see a large low pressure system push in from the south that will bring freezing rain and snow to the state. Des Moines will likely first see rain and freezing rain push in during the evening hours, so there will be some icing trouble through the evening. Tuesday morning some rain and freezing rain may be left over, but as temperatures fall it will turn into light snow here in the metro with accumulations expected to stay under and inch. Snow will be heaviest in far north and northwest Iowa mainly for Tuesday morning and early afternoon. Temps will fall very cold into Wednesday morning with brutal wind chills. After that the weather pattern calms down and warms up with 40s back in the forecast. -Local5 Meteorologist Sam Schreier
