Mary Sugden joined the Local 5 News Team in September of 2021 as Investigative Reporter.
She comes to Des Moines from Rockford, Illinois, where she spent six years at WREX. During her time at the NBC affiliate, she worked as a producer and reporter, before becoming the station’s first-ever investigative reporter. In Rockford, Mary’s reporting contributed to four Regional Emmy Awards, a number of Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, and one National Edward R. Murrow Award
Mary grew up in Woodstock, Illinois, a small town northwest of Chicago. She went on to study journalism at Loyola University in Chicago where she enjoyed internships with local sports channels and her athletics department. Mary is a diehard Chicago sports fan, and was lucky enough to be reporting in Wrigleyville the night the Cubs won the World Series.
When she’s not chasing down a story, Mary loves to spend time with her family, trying out new baking recipes, and explore her new home of Des Moines!
