SEATTLE -- The man who married his former sixth-grade teacher after she was jailed for raping him says their relationship hasn't always been good, but they've persevered.

Vili Fualaau and Mary Kay Letourneau discussed their lives together with Barbara Walters in an interview that will air on ABC News "20/20" Friday night. Fualaau told Walters that "I don't think there's ever a full 10 good years of marriage. ... But, you know, what matters is how you pull through all the bad times."

Letourneau became tabloid fodder in the 1990s when she was convicted of raping the then 12-year-old Fualaau, her student at Shorewood Elementary in Burien, Washington, at the time.

She pleaded guilty to child rape in 1997 and served six and a half years in prison for child rape, but remained in contact with her former student.

After serving her sentence, Letourneau and Fualaau married in 2005 when he was 22.

Letourneau is now 51 and Fualaau is 31. They have two teenage daughters, one of whom was born while Letourneau was in prison.
