Ames public schools, library team up to provide meals for kids during the summer

Families are able to drive through the alley on 6th Street between Douglas Avenue and Kellogg Avenue or walk up on 5th Street to grab a meal.

AMES, Iowa — The Ames Public Library is joining Ames schools as a pickup site for free summer meals for kids and teens.

Monday was the first day the pickup site was able to hand out those meals.

Families were able to drive through the alley on 6th Street between Douglas Avenue and Kellogg Avenue or walk up on 5th Street to grab a meal.

Organizers like Hannah Preston with the library said this isn't the first time they've handed out meals to help Iowans.

"Our location has actually offered summer lunches for the last couple of years and this year we're just able to do it with the Ames public schools and our location is very central, so we're able to do walk up and drive up lunches," Preston explained.

Meals are available for pickup from the library Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The library isn't letting people inside the building, but you can still check out books online and pick them up drive-thru style.
