18th annual Chow's Winter Classic goes on despite pandemic

Chow's Winter Classic's 18th annual event comes after a tough year for Iowa's gymnasts

DES MOINES, Iowa — The 18th annual Chow's Winter Classic kicked off Friday following a difficult year for Iowa's gymnasts.

"The biggest challenge was getting back in the gym just for practice" said meet director Sean Gardener. "Making sure we stayed pulled together, we're following our policies, wearing our masks, cleaning our surfaces daily after each rotation and then applying all those same policies to our event this weekend. "

To protect both the gymnasts and spectators, new safety protocols have been put in place for the event. Masks or face shields will be required by everyone inside the venue and disposable masks will be available at admissions.

Gymnasts will wear their masks during open stretch and when they are not competing.

Individual gyms are encouraged to screen their athletes' temperature and gymnasts will supply their own chalk, spray bottle and grip brush.

All equipment will be cleaned and sanitized between each rotation and athletes from the same gym will be placed into rotations together whenever possible.

The event takes place all weekend from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets can be found online.
