Moving forward together: Drake Relays tradition of painting Carpenter Avenue back on for 2021

Many of the painted squares along the street have a theme of moving forward.

DES MOINES COUNTY, Iowa — After canceling last year's event due to COVID-19, Drake University students were able to hit the pavement for their annual Drake Relays tradition.

Their tradition is to paint Carpenter Avenue, which runs right through the middle of campus.

This year, the squares have a theme of moving forward. One square done by the Coalition of Black Students reflected on the atmosphere of campus during the past year.

Their theme is "we move forward together."

"Moving forward and just knowing the importance of unity is just very important especially just this year," said Megan Lee, a sophomore at Drake. "Especially being a multicultural organization here at a PWI, it is very important to just know that we can't progress as a collective if we don't work together."

Griff II made an appearance Wednesday and Thursday at Carpenter. Don't worry, the whole thing was documented on his Twitter and Instagram
