Get outside & join Iowa DNR's annual 'First Day Hike Challenge'

Iowans have through Sunday to check into any of 27 parks to be entered into a drawing for the prize.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources want you to get outside this year.

Their annual 'First Day Hike' typically consists of guided tours across 27 of Iowa's parks, starting on the first of every year, but COVID-19 is forcing this year to be all self-guided. And the DNR even turned it into a challenge.

Local 5 spoke with one hiker who was happy there are some outdoor winter opportunities in the state.

"As my dad would say everybody isn't your friend just because I like to do things doesn't mean everybody should like the same thing." said Jon Inderski. "I think those are good words of advice."

Iowans have through Sunday to check into any of 27 parks to be entered into a drawing for the prize; A two-night stay in a cabin at Lake Darling State Park.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Iowa's state park system.
